What is an Electromagnetic Relay

Update:02-12-2022
Usually, an electromagnetic relay is made up of two parts. The relay contacts and the electromagnet. When energized, the electromagnet turns on the relay, which in turn opens and closes the contacts. This allows the relay to switch large voltages, amplify power, and pilot lights. In other words, relays are electrical switches that are used in building automation.
The relay contacts are made from low-resistance metals. They are corrosion-resistant and can be used to switch high-power sources, such as power tools and motors. However, relay contacts can degrade faster than their rated value. This may cause a hazardous situation. This is why it is important to ensure the correct rated value for your relay.
Relays are available in a variety of sizes and configurations. Depending on the application, relays can operate on up to 5A. Relays are commonly used in control panels, building automation, manufacturing, and more. Some relays are also used in avionics and electronics.
Electromagnetic relays are based on the split-phase induction motor principle. When voltage is applied to the coil, the magnetic field generated is transferred to the armature and the iron armature moves between stationary contacts. The armature can be moved mechanically, or it can be driven by an electromagnet. Typically, relays are designed to use low power to control high load current. They can also be used for pilot lights and audible alarms.
Relays come in AC and DC (Direct Current) types. AC relays are a less expensive type and are usually used in manufacturing. However, they are also used in cabinet applications. For example, some automotive relays include a diode inside the relay case. This is a useful safety feature because it can detect reverse currents and undercurrents. Relays can also be used to detect overcurrent.
